The Simpsons - Councilwoman Has Simpsons Idea For Porta - Pools The Asbury Park Press

RED BANK It might be a case of where life imitates The Simpsons , specifically where the town of Springfield trucked a pool mobile to the Simpsons neighborhood to help kids beat the summer heat.

Borough Councilwoman Sharon Lee suggested the next best thing, investigating the purchase of three Dumpster pools created by a New York company which is set to auction them off.

Her other beat-the-heat idea, to provide sprinklers installed on fire hydrants to help neighborhood kids get a quick cool down, got a warm reception from borough officials, but the portable pools received a cold shoulder.

The sprinkler idea was referred to the fire chief by Mayor Pasquale Pat Menna, but he scuttled the portable dumpster pool idea citing tight budgets, liability concerns and the need to have a lifeguard on duty.

Spray caps we can look into, said Stanley Sickels, borough administrator. For pools, the state department of health has rules about water quality and supervision.

Lee said she seized on the idea because the New York based company Macro-Sea was set to auction off Dumpster pools it created in 2009 to convert a Brooklyn junkyard in to a lo-fi country club that featured a cluster of Dumpster swimming pools, lounge chairs and cabanas.

The Dumpster pools also were used in 2010 for the city s Summer Streets program where portions of Park Avenue are closed to allow summer and pedestrian activities on periodic weekends, company officials said.

We ve been trying to get a community pool for years, she said after proposing it at the July 27 council meeting which followed a week of oppressive heat and humidity. It s a full sized roll off dumpster.they have a (pool) lining. It s a neat idea to supply a pool for a temporary time.

Lee envisions trucking a Dumpster pool in to a neighborhood and parking it there for a day, not unlike the Simpsons pool mobile.

I d like the opportunity to place pools in different parts of town, Lee said, echoing the New York summer streets concept. It s an interesting idea.

Lee said that she read the pools were going up for auction soon. When contacted, Macro-Sea officials declined to say exactly when the auction would happen, but said there has been interest in the dumpster pool idea from across the country and from overseas.
