A new trailer for the PlayStation 3 version of Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch has been released.
Ni no Kuni is a fantasy adventure RPG which follows a young boy named Oliver and his friends as they work to revive his mother in a parallel world called Ni No Kuni. It s a collaboration between Level-5 (Professor Layton, Dark Cloud) and Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro).
The new trailer fleshes out a lot of new character and mechanical points. The first notable fact is that Joe Hisaishi will be composing the musical score. He s worked on many Ghibli films like Spirited Away and Kiki s Delivery Service, as well as other well-known movies like Departures and Hana-bi. The songs will be recorded with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, which is playing throughout the trailer.
Check it out after the bump.
Game-wise, we are introduced to a slot machine mini-game, reminiscent of early Pokemon Game Corners. There s magic and dragon riding, and a system of synthesizing items through the Pot Synthesizer , which is a genie who lives in a pot and combines things for you. You can fight zombie pirates, woodland creatures, spiders, dragons, and a boss that looks like the Cheshire Cat.
The fighting style is interesting because it looks like it combines both turn-based and live action combat elements. You can choose a character to control and run around the arena, but dialogue boxes near the character s head gives you options like fight, item, magic, flee, defend, and strategize, which you select as you fight. Each character also has their own special move. In the trailer we see Oliver execute Fire Storm, as well as his party member Jack s Steel God, and Maru s Null Harmony.
The different characters we are introduced to (in order) include the protagonist Oliver, the blonde musician Maru, Jack (who looks like a mailman), Shizuku the lamp monster, Nyandaru the fat king cat, Kaura the fat elf/bull lady, Buhiden the charming friend, Oliver s mother Allie, the main antagonist Ruemesu, Kokoru the little ghost girl, and Koku and Pichi, the Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee of the game. Maru, Jack, Kokoru, Buhiden, and Shizuku all look like they can be members in your party.
The game looks beautiful. The world is expansive and rendered gorgeously, with urban, rural, volcanic, desert, and mountain terrains. The characters are as creative as you would expect in a Ghibli production, everything is clean and colorful, and there are dazzling effects. Ni no Kuni looks to be incredibly innovative, both mechanically and story-wise, with a vast, playable world designed by one of the best companies in the animation industry.
